Identifying and Removing Old Deck Boards

Installing a wood deck is a great way to increase your property value and encourage your family to spend more time outdoors. However, wood deteriorates over time, and you may need to remove and replace some of the boards. This is important for both the aesthetic of your deck and your family’s safety.

If one of the boards in your deck appears unsightly, there’s a good chance that it is rotten or otherwise structurally unsound. Carefully apply pressure to the unsightly board—if it seems insecure in any way, it needs to be removed. To remove the board, you should remove all the screws or nails and pry up the board with a crowbar. Once you remove the board, check to see if it’s rotten; if it’s in fair condition, you may use it to reinforce one of the joists, thus strengthening your deck.
