What Is Softwood?

You may have heard the terms “hardwood” and “softwood” in the past, sparking curiosity over why the two are different. Although many people believe that hardwood is harder, tougher, and more durable than softwood, this is not necessarily true. Although softwood trees are often less dense and easier to cut than hardwood trees, the weight of a wood does not necessarily correlate with whether it is categorized as a softwood or hardwood. The distinction between hardwood and softwood arises via plant reproduction. Softwood comes from a class of plants called gymnosperms. Gymnosperms produce seeds that fall to the ground during reproduction without any kind of covering such as a nut or fruit. These trees also tend to keep their leaves year round, and evergreens fall into the softwood category.
