Tricks for Cleaning Hardwood Floors

If you want to keep your hardwood floors looking pristine, it’s important that you understand how to take proper care of them. However, many homeowners aren’t aware of what the best techniques are for maintaining hardwood flooring. Here are some tricks that you should know:

Broom and dust pan

Use the Right Cleaning Agents.
Harsh cleaners such as vinegar and ammonia will rub away at your hardwood floor’s finish, resulting in a dulled appearance over time. Other common cleaning agents, such as wax or wood floor polish, will simply make the floor sticky and trap dirt instead of removing it. Use a hardwood floor cleaner that has been designed specifically for that purpose, and use only a small amount when cleaning.

Don’t Use Water.
Taking a mop and a bucket of water to a hardwood floor is something you should avoid. Even small amounts of water can seep into the floor, damage the finish, and cause the wood to become warped. Mopping can also cause very small scratches in the finish, which will take a toll on your floor’s appearance.

Clean Your Floor Regularly.
Dirt can build up very quickly on a hardwood floor, and frequent traffic can make that dirt very difficult to remove. To get rid of dust and debris, sweep carefully, then use a dry terrycloth mop or a microfiber cleaning pad along with a safe hardwood floor cleaner. If possible, try to sweep or vacuum your floor at least once a day to discourage dirt buildup.
