Determining if a Wood Entry Door Is Right for You

Wood entry doors are durable, secure, attractive, and can be found in a wide range of designs. If you want to add a classic focal point to the facade of your home, nothing beats the charm of an Entry Door made from specialty woods. Find out if a wood entry door is right for you and which exterior door style you should get.

Can You Care Regularly for Your Wood Door?
An exterior door made out of specialty woods can hold up as long as the house itself—but only if it’s routinely maintained. Wood entry doors need a fresh coat of paint or polyurethane every two to three years. For many people, this is a small price to pay for a beautiful wood door, but others would rather forgo all maintenance and opt for a door made of steel or fiberglass.

How Important is Security?
There is a misconception that wood doors are easier to break through. But thick wood entry doors are actually quite secure, especially if you opt for a thicker door that’s about 1-3/4 inches thick. Secure the hinges into the door jamb with 3-inch-long screws, order hurricane-rated glass, and invest in Mortise locks if you want to ensure your home is safe from a break in.

What Elements Would the Door Be Exposed to?
Wood doors hold up best and require less maintenance when they are protected from rain. The roof should project outward from the house by at least half of the height of the door to ensure adequate coverage. Sun exposure should not exceed four hours a day on a wood entry door, as sunlight fades the wood quickly.  If your door does not have any protection or it has a high exposure to the elements, you may want to opt for a Steel or Fiberglass Door.  Some Fiberglass Doors are available in a wood grain finish so that you can have the best of both worlds, but you can expect to pay more for the better looking wood grain finish.
