The Ohlone and other groups of indigenous peoples lived in the San Francisco
Bay Area before Spanish explorers and missionaries came in the late 1700s.
El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe was founded in 1777, and served as agricultural support for nearby military
installations. San Jose came under U.S. control in 1846, and became the
first capital of California in 1850.
San Jose spent much of its history as a relatively quiet farming community,
but shifted to manufacturing and high technology after World War II. Today,
more than one million people live in the city, and about 8.5 million people
live in the Bay Area. Apple, Google, IBM, and other high-tech giants have
headquarters in the San Jose area.
